R'n'B singer/songwriter Craig David receives honorary Doctor of Music
Internationally renowned R'n'B singer/songwriter Craig David , the youngest solo male artist to get a UK number one hit - with his debut single, 'Fill Me In' – returned to his home city to receive an Honorary Doctorate.
Southampton Solent University awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Music during a ceremony at the city's Guildhall on Friday (November 7).
Since working with the Southampton- based garage act, Artful Dodger on the number 2 hit, Rewind, Craig has sold more than 13 million copies of his first four albums. All Craig's 18 singles have been Top 20 hits around the world, and his albums, Born To Do It, Slicker Than Your Average, The Story Goes and last year's Trust Me have all been certified multi-Platinum.
Craig David has also received numerous industry accolades, including three Ivor Novello Awards (Songwriter Of The Year and Best Contemporary Song), four MOBOs (one for Best UK Act) and two MTV Europe Awards.
A citation (due to be) read out during Southampton Solent University's degree ceremony declared: "Musically, Craig is passionate about a wide variety of different styles and sounds. Lyrically, he still has plenty to say. Craig's creativity, innovation and willingness to push boundaries are characteristics that have propelled him to super stardom.
"In a highly competitive business, Craig's determination and raw talent have helped him forge a stellar career and will, we are sure, continue to do so."
Craig David will be releasing his first Greatest Hits set on November 24 2008.
After receiving his award Craig went on to open one of the University's music studios.|
