Jeremy Irons receives honorary degree of Doctor of Arts

Internationally acclaimed actor, Jeremy Irons, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Southampton Solent University during its graduation ceremony on Monday (November 3).
Southampton Solent University awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the Arts for Jeremy Irons' contribution to the film, theatre, television and music areas of the Arts during a ceremony at the city's Guildhall.
A citation read out during the ceremony declared: "With a career that has spanned several decades, through stage, television and film, Jeremy Irons continues to create extraordinary and memorable roles, touching audiences worldwide."
Accepting his award from the university's Chancellor, Lord Alan West, Jeremy told graduates: "It doesn't matter what you do in life - you're only here a short time – just try to make sure you do it to the best of your ability and that you enjoy it, because then you will do it well."
Jeremy – who was born in Cowes, Isle of Wight – said he was delighted to receive his first ever university honorary award from the university closest to his beloved birthplace. He is a keen sailor, who has been successful in yacht races around the island. "Southampton Solent University is close to where I was born. Whenever I hear the word 'Solent' it warms my heart. I am thrilled"
