Course overview  

This course offers a rich and diverse subject base. You'll be prepared for a career in architectural and /or architectural technology practices, working on domestic, industrial and commercial projects.

Units in architectural design will develop your understanding of building design concepts and theories. On the technology components, you'll focus on construction, material science, services and structures, as well as project management and economics.

Throughout your time on this highly vocational degree you'll be exposed to varied and lively teaching and learning methods. Our approachable and highly qualified staff will encourage you to experiment with modern presentation techniques, like colour and physical modelling, as well as master essential drawing skills using manual and computer aided methods (CAD).    

Professional accreditation

The course is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), |and Solent University has gained an Accredited Centre for Learning and Teaching in Architectural Technology status. Students are entitled to join CIAT |as student members and are eligible for Associate membership upon graduation. The course is also fully accredited by the Association of Building Engineers (ABE) and is recognised as a designated Built Environment course from the Construction Industry Council (CIC).

Assessment

Design-based portfolios, essays, research projects, reports, examinations, and presentations. Project work is continuously assessed to provide regular feedback and to enable you to develop and increase your creative skills and practical awareness.

Entry level

C2000: 120 points with at least one 6-unit award
Pre-C2000: 8 points from two A Level passes and five GCSE/GCE O Levels (Grade C or above) including Mathematics, English and science-based subject
or, BTEC National Certificate/Diploma
or, relevant Access course.
The course welcomes applications from students who may be admitted on the basis of experience rather than standard qualifications.

Special features

The Architectural Technology degree at Southampton Solent University is an exciting opportunity to specialise in the art and science of building design. The course offers a carefully balanced curriculum based on the twin pillars of Architectural Design and Technology. Studies are also underpinned by other relevant issues such as statutory controls, including Building Regulations and British Standards, health and safety and professional practice and specification. 

Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared for widely varied career opportunities within a range of organisations. These include architectural and architectural technology practices, local authorities, housing associations and building contractors. Alternatively you could set up your own own private consultancy and practice as an architectural technology professional.

The Architectural Technologist can expect a fulfilling career in a number of roles within a design or construction team. Projects could involve preparing detailed design schemes for new buildings, refurbishment and conversions of older buildings, production of detailed drawings, specification writing and material selection, project management and contract administration and preparing documents for statutory approvals.

Industrial placements

Although there is no formal industrial placement, the course operates a successful Work Placement scheme where you can gain valuable work experience. For further details on this scheme please contact the Course Leader.

Further information

The course is part of the Built Environment Degree programme with shared modules across various pathways. This allows you to study alongside and interact with those from other disciplines within the programme. This way you can understand and appreciate the construction /design team and building projects as an integrated process.

The vocational and practical emphasis of the course is intended to develop professionalism within graduates and to maximise employment opportunities. The programme enjoys and maintains excellent links with employers from a broad section of the industry. Studies are enhanced by real case studies and guest speakers from relevant disciplines. 

Fees

Fees for the 2008-2009 academic year are:

£1550 pa or £525 per 20 points unit for UK and EC students. £4920 pa for overseas students.
