Art Asia Mela

During 2007 the Festival took place on Saturday 30 June. Despite the very wet weather people from the local and surrounding communities flocked to Hoglands Park to experience the cultural feast of music and dance of the South Asian entertainment extravaganza.  

Members of the Recruitment, Access and Partnerships (RAP) team, along with some student ambassadors, represented the University at Southampton's fifth Asian Festival or 'Mela'.  

The event was co-ordinated by Art Asia - an organisation promoting South Asian arts across the region.   

This was the University's fourth year as one of the official main sponsors of the Mela, with the University's banner crowning the main stage.  The RAP team were also present in the Community marquee to provide information on education, welfare, employment and training thus raising awareness of the opportunities available.   

The Mayor of Southampton opened the event and those who attended had the opportunity to sample the sights, sounds and tastes of the East throughout the day. 

The 'Mela' provided a great opportunity for the University to reach out to a diverse range of communities and continue to be part of an historic event which is becoming bigger and better every year.
