Information For Parents

Your Questions Answered

Graduation dayWhy should I encourage my child to go into Higher Education?

Students going into Higher Education are opening up a new world for themselves. They will meet new people, learn new things and obtain a greater insight into what opportunities are available to them for their future careers.

Should I encourage my child to take a vocational degree or one in their favourite subject?

Studying at Higher level is challenging to all students. Employers look for key skills that studying at degree level teaches students for instance: communication, teamwork, problem solving and using information technology. These skills can be transferred into employment so students should be encouraged to take a degree they are interested in. If they wish to specialise in a certain subject eg law or engineering they will need to undertake a degree in that area.

Will I have to pay anything towards my child's course fees?

Fees are payable for all courses, the amount that students have to pay depends on a number of factors. No contribution is required from students whose parents' residual income is below £22,010. Full details are available in the Department for Education and Employment's leaflet Financial Support for Higher Education Students available on their website www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport/| by calling free on 0800 731 9133.
