Alternative Accommodation

The University's accredited housing list| can be found on the student portal under Services, Accommodation and then Private Accommodation.  

Of course, living in Student Residences isn’t your only option. Some students choose lodgings with or without meals provided, and many rent a flat or a house with friends if they prefer a bit more independence. To help you find the right place for you, our Accommodation Office is here to help.

Where to start looking

SASSH SchemeIn partnership with the University of Southampton and Southampton City Council, we have compiled an accredited directory of private accommodation in Southampton and the surrounding area. The scheme known as SASSH (Southampton Accredited Scheme for Student Housing) uses certain criteria, such as having valid gas and electricity safety certificates and smoke detectors, that a landlord must declare that their property meets and agrees to maintain.

Before you commit

Unfortunately, it would be impossible for us to inspect and validate all the properties on our directory of accredited properties. So, we strongly advise you to arrange a visit to the property that interests you to ensure: 

  • it fits with your needsPrivate Sector Housing
  • all the information advertised is accurate
  • smoke alarms have been fitted
  • that certification is up-to-date

While we are only too pleased to offer any advice you might need, it is up to you to negotiate rents and deposits with the landlord. You’ll normally be asked to sign a Tenancy Agreement for the whole year. This may include having to pay full rent or a reduced rate over the summer vacation if you want to keep the property for the next academic year. Again, this is something you should discuss with the landlord. You’ll also need to figure bills into the overall cost, like phone, gas and electricity, as these aren’t normally included in the rent.

Before you sign anything, make sure you are satisfied with what’s being offered and that you understand your rights and obligations as a tenant. As you’ll be living in the local community and representing the University, it’s also important to familiarise yourself with the University’s Good Neighbour Policy.
